Description

Set in 1892, HOSTILES tells the story of a legendary Army Captain (Christian Bale), who, after stern resistance, reluctantly agrees to escort a dying Cheyenne war chief (Wes Studi) and his family back to tribal lands. Making the harrowing and perilous journey from Fort Berringer, an isolated Army outpost in New Mexico, to the grasslands of Montana, the former rivals encounter a young widow (Rosamund Pike) whose family was murdered on the plains. Together, they must join forces to overcome the punishing landscape, hostile Comanche, and vicious outliers that they encounter along the way.

The movie is absolutely amazing. Brutal from the very beginning. Excellent acting and cinematography. Definitely a must see if you like westerns.
  • Epic With Beauty, Intelligence, and a Great Message

This movie is an epic take on westerns that is both brutal and beautiful. It tells the story of a soldier who learns the value of seeing his enemy in a new light, and finds that he emerges from an epic journey a changed person. The acting from Christian Bale, Rosumond Pike, and Wes Studi is among their best ever, and the cinematography provides beautiful portraits of the western USA. People in the reviews seem to quibble with the change in the main character over the course of the movie - saying it is too quick and drastic. But they miss the impact on the Captain of not only his encounters with the Native Americans he is ordered to protect, but also of the disillusionment of his fellow soldiers and the effect on their psyche of a career in killing. The Captain is intelligent enough to learn from all of them in the course of the long march from the southern to the northern territories. It is possible that he changed that much - as evidenced by the ending. Special note should be made of the music by the great minimalist composer Max Richter that perfectly matches the sober reality of the story and the vast expanses of the American west. See this movie.

I have seen some people write about it being boring. I guess if you need that kind of action then go see a marvel movie. You probably have ADD. This is a journey that tries to give you a sense of what it was like in that time period. Good story and good actors.

Well written this film takes its time to really give the viewer a great story. The only problem (light spoiler ahead) I had was the characters falling short of their “manifest destiny.” After fighting so hard to secure a place in the West. The ending falls short in that regard. But the film is still highly recommended.

With so many lightweight comic book movies out there, few really good movies that touch us a humans have been made. While this movie had some really gut wrenching violence (especially in the opening scene), the tremendous acting and the way it was filmed makes us feel the full force of the tragic emotion. Anyone who has lost a family member, especially in a violent sudden manner will be hurting after watching this. The scenery of the US, from New Mexico to Montana is gorgeous and the transition attests to what a marvel the US is. Some areas are so “hard scrabble” that it is a testament to early native peoples and settlers that they could survive. My grandfather was half Blackfoot, and hearing his tales of generations trying to survive are almost unbelievable (and brutality, not just from the US government, but by other rival tribes). His grandmother was a slave to the Sioux after they wiped out her village and only her beauty kept her alive. The depiction of human nature in this movie seems accurate. Human nature often grounded in hatred, and the redemption of the soul is a great message. It is not overly done. That stated, I wonder how many people in history actually had such a change? Some of the hatred is still alive unfortunately, and humanity still cannot overcome this dark side of our nature. Many can overcome that hatred and redemption and love can be a result to the lucky ones. I like this movie a lot. It sticks with me and that was one of the goals of the director. Very well made and a good story.

I was moved by the authenticity of the display of the human emotions between Christian Bale and Rosamund Pike’s characters. Well done.

I will only leave technical reviews because there’s enough talk out there elsewhere about the story flaws. This movie is a must own on 4K especially for people who loved The Revenant. If you want beautiful landscapes and scenes from the old west, this is your next movie. It is just eye candy.
  • Finally a movie with substance
